Fletcher Benton's Alphabet

Fletcher Benton's Alphabet

Text and photographs by David Finn

Fletcher Benton is well known for his large metal sculptures, many of which seem to defy gravity in their precariously balanced forms. At the same time, his early career as a commercial sign painter led him to an appreciation for the purity of the Roman alphabet and inspired him to create his own set of letters and numbers. David Finn's detail photographs of these works reveal the distinct personality of each. They unfold, curve, create angles and spaces to create dynamic sculptural forms. David Finn is a world-renowned photographer of sculpture with more than 90 books to his credit ranging from ancient Egypt through the 21st century. He resides in New Rochelle, New York.
